The Corrigan Story

Our story is one of family

Frank “The Chief” Corrigan moved to Dearborn, Michigan, in 1923, lured by the $5 daily salary given by Ford Motor Company. At Ford, Frank worked third-shift on the Ford farms performing a mix of varying jobs – at times even chauffeuring Henry Ford himself. The Chief was ambitious, and during the day when he wasn’t employed at Ford he operated an ice delivery company with his brother. After the Great Depression hit, Frank used his trucks to serve families forced from their houses move their belongings.

And thus, Corrigan Moving Systems was born.

World War II brought about a new concern to Frank and Corrigan Moving due to the struggle hiring help during the war years. Frank’s firstborn son, Paul Corrigan, was summoned back from the Air Force in 1945 to aid the family and the family business. Paul had always dreamed of attending college. Instead, he took on the moving company, putting himself through what he called the “school of hard knocks”.

Paul was a respected leader, and with his counsel Corrigan began to expand. In 1949, Corrigan joined United Van Lines because being part of an agency-owned van line appealed to Paul. The cooperative ownership structure provides agents, like Corrigan, a voice in the direction of the van line.

During the following forty years, the Corrigan family grew along with the business. Paul married Kathleen O’Hehir in 1954 and hand-in-hand they raised six children. While growing up all six children worked at Corrigan.

In 1969 Corrigan started its second office in Ann Arbor, Michigan and ran as a two-warehouse company for the following 15 years. Starting in 1984, they started a rapid eight-year growth and acquisition phase. New locations were started in Auburn Hills, Toledo, Flint, Bay City and Grand Rapids. In 1987, Corrigan bought a new location in Farmington Hills and relocated their headquarters from the Dearborn location.

In 1995, Paul’s sons took over the executive positions in the moving company.

Corrigan Moving has always welcomed growth opportunities that help increase its quality and service offerings. Two excellent options presented themselves to David Corrigan. So, in 2003, a branch was added in Rochester, New York. A Chicago, Illinois location came in 2006. These were the first Corrigan locations in these two states. Additional expansion brought a location in Cleveland, Ohio; and in 2018, a warehouse was opened in Buffalo, New York. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office was added in 2022.

As Corrigan has expanded, it has also expanded its services. A long way from hauling ice, Corrigan now delivers a broad range of services including household goods moving, commercial and office relocations, record storage, systems furniture assembly and disassembly, logistics, and international freight forwarding.

Today, the Corrigan employees continue to live by Frank’s founding mission. And because of that, we have advanced into one of the most reputable moving company nationwide.
